Pebble Plant, Livingstone Daisy - Mesembryanthemum criniflorum (syn. Dorotheanthus bellidiformis) Sub-tropical succulent plant, native to South Africa, belonging   to the Aizoaceae family.

The plants do extremely well as annuals in cooler climates and can be grown or transplanted to the greenhouse when weather grows cool or they can be grown as perennials in warmer climates. They are very well suited to the rock garden or to containers and make very atractive bedding plants forming a compact mat of foliage and large daisy like blooms.

Mesembryanthemums do best in light soils that drain well. Heavy clays are not suitable. Rocky and sandy soils are preferred. Plant in full sun for best results.

Propagation is easily performed by division in the spring or by sowing seed. Seeds should be sown in pots or trays and covered very lightly (a depth of 1/8 inch) then covered with plastic or glass and kept moist at 60-70F. Bottom watering is recommended so as not to disturb the seeds while germinating. The covering should be removed as soon as seedlings are observed. Seedlings should be transplanted to larger containers when they reach 2 inches in height. They may be placed outdoors when the temperatures do not fall below 50F. In outdoor plantings, the plants should be spaced at 12 inches apart each way.
