Bachelors Buttons Centaurea cyanus  Bachelor's Buttons (Cornflower, Kornblume, Bluebow, Hurtsickle, Blue CapBluet) - Centaurea cyanus - Annual, reseeds freely;  Lovely 1in. blooms in shades of white, blue and pink atop sturdy stems with carnation-like foliage.  Wonderful in a cottage garden or in a bouquet.  At one time, the flowers were used to manufacture a French eyewash, Eau de Casselunettes, which was used to treat weak eyes.  Culpeper, in his famous herbal, declared that the flowers, mixed with plantain, horsetail and comfrey was an excellent antidote for the bite of scorpions and other venomous creatures and the seeds were used to fight infectious diseases, including the plague.  The blooms are still used with alum-water to make a lavender-blue water color paint.  It was also said that the stems of the plant were so strong that they would dull any sickle used to cut them, thus the name hurtsickle.  Full sun; plant height: 18-24in.
