Zantedeschia aethiopica

Zantedeschia aethiopica(Calla Lily, Arum Lily) is a tender herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the Arum family, Araceae. They are excellent for planting in a greenhouse or outdoors in warm climates. The plants have thickened rootstock or rhizomes and large flower spathes. Zantedeschia aethiopica is the most popular of the Calla Lilies, the Common Calla Lily, and has large white blooms and is widely cultivated for market.

Zantedeschia is amoiture loving plant that thrives in loamy soil. In cooler climates, the roots are dug in the fall and planted in pots in a mixture of peat moss and loam or compost and maintained at a temperature of at least 50F. Water levels should be maintained although the plants will use less water when dormant. The roots may then be planted outdoors in the spring when the outdoor temperature does not fall below 50F. They should be spaced in the outdoor garden at 18" apart each way. In cooler climates, those plants planted outdoors should be lifted again before the first frost and stored in pots as detailed above.

Zantedeschias make perfect container plants or landscape plants for garden or pool. The flowers are favorites at Easter in the US and are often used for weddings and funerals.
