Carolina Lupine (False Lupine) Thermopsis caroliniana - Large perennial plant with dense spikes of yellow blooms in the summer. The leaves are oval and are arranged in triangles. Spreads by rhizomes and is a nitrogen fixing plant. Tough, very adaptable plant preferring well-drained soils. Heat and drought tolerant, so it will do well where true lupines would not. Good species to use in wildflower gardens or natural settings where it can be planted in groups, but works well in places where a tall border is desired. Native to North Carolina. Hardy to -20F (-28.8C); height: 4ft.
