Formosa Sweet Gum (Chinese Sweet Gum) Liquidambar formosa or Liquidambar formosana - Lovely tree with a pyramidal shape that is slightly more rounded than Liquidambar styraciflua. Leaves are star shaped and turn a gorgeous bright red in the autumn. Great shade or specimen tree for warmer climates. Hardy to 10F (-17.7C); height: 40ft.

Sweet Gum - Liquidamber
styraciflua - Deciduous cone-shaped tree with star shaped leaves that are
fragrant when bruised, dark green in summer, but become a blaze of orange
and red in the fall. Flowers are inconspicuous, but are followed
by seeds, which are spiked balls about 1 inch in diameter - useful
for decoration. The tree sap can be chewed as gum and
is a source of American storax. The red or yellow tinted wood is
prized for furniture. Best grown in a sunny location in moist loamy
well-drained soil. Hardy to -20F (-28.8C); plant height: 130
ft.
