Stinging Nettle (Urtica dioca)  Perennial;  Medicinal;  Leaves and stems of the plant are covered with tiny hollow hairs that release a skin irritant when touched, giving a sharp, very unpleasant stinging sensation.  The sting is lost, however, when the leaves and stems are cooked.  (Who do you suppose ever got the idea to cook these things?  Can you imagine the logic involved?)  Nettle tea has been used for centuries to treat arthritis, eczema and anemia.  More recently, the plant has been discovered to contain high concentrates of iron and vitamin C.
