Japanese Pagoda Tree Sophora japonicaJapanese Pagoda Tree - Sophora japonica -  Deciduous tree with oval leaves and creamy white pea-like blooms in summer.  Blooms are followed by fruits which hang in clusters, resembling a chain of beads.  Considered in Chinese medicine as one of the 50 fundamental herbs, it is used as an antibacterial, to treat internal haemorrhage, circulation problems, internal parasites, swelling, headache, hypertension, and epilepsy.    Hardy to -30F (-34.4C); height: 45ft.

Texas Mountain Laurel Sophora secundiflora  Mescal  (Texas Mountain Laurel) Sophora secundiflora - Small mutli-stemmed evergreen tree or shrub bearing strongly fragrant lavender blooms in spring, followed by seed pods, which are known as mescal beans.   The seeds contain the alkaloid cytosine and are extremely toxic.  Proper care should be taken with them. A yellow dye can be obtained from the wood.  Hardy to -10F (-23.3C); height: 25ft. (15ft spread)
