Sassafras Tree
Sassafras albidium Tree
Sassafras (Salsafras) - Sassafras albidium - An attractive distinctive small tree, native to the US, which possesses leaves shaped like small mittens that in the autumn become lovely shades of red and orange.  The root bark is used to make sassafras tea, a pleasant beverage, prized as a 'spring tonic'.  It has also been used to treat rheumatism, colds, and kidney disorders.  Safrole, a substance obtained from the roots, is used in soaps, toothpastes and as a dental antiseptic.  New leaves are used in salads, and the older ones are cooked and used as a thickener- filé powder (gumbo filé).  The tree is also considered a mosquito repellant.  The plant does best in a well-drained soil under the  canopy of other trees or in a location with dappled shade.  Hardy to -30F (-34.4C);  height: 40ft.
