Wintergreen plant Gaultheria procumbens seeds
Wintergreen- Gaultheria procumbens - Evergreen groundcover with light pink blooms maturing to red berries.  The leaves are edible when very young  (older leaves are tough and taste strongly of germolene).  The fruits are best when eaten after frost, when they are used to make pies and jellies.  The leaves were also used to treat aches and pains and contain oil of wintergreen, which is used as an antiseptic and analgesic, as it contains a salicylate related to aspirin.  The plant prefers a moist shady location and makes an excellent ground cover.  Hardy to -40F (-40C); height: 8in.
