ptelea trifoliata hop tree seed plant  Hoptree (Wafer Ash, Wingseed, Shrub Trefoil) - Ptelia trifoliata

Deciduous member of the rue family, Rutaceae, this shrub or small tree has trilobed leaves and fragrant greenish white blooms in spring, followed by thin wafer-like seeds. Tends toward multi-trunks, but can be trained as a single trunk species.  Ptelea trifoliata is a native North American species and is considered threatened or endangered in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The trees thrive in most any well drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded location and is very adaptable.  An attractive specimen or mid sized shade tree, the blooms make it a desirable plant.  Trees can be trained to form a single trunk, but it will be short.

Medicinally, the bark has been used to treat dyspepsia and as a bitter tonic.  It has also been used to treat rheumatism, asthma, and as a decongestant.

The trees are easily propagated by sowing seed outdoors in late fall for spring germination or by artificially  Cold stratifying seed for 90-120 days prior to sowing for best germination.  Seeds should then be sown in a pots or an outdoor bed.  Once germination occurs, seedlings should be transplanted to larger pots or to a permanent location when they reach about 6 inches in height.  It may be necessary to stake young trees to avoid breakage.

Hardy to -40F (-40C); height: 25ft.  Spread: 25ft
