Bristlecone Pine (Rocky Mountain Bristlecone Pine, Hickory Pine, Colorado Bristlecone Pine) Pinus aristata or Pinus balfouriana  - This pretty dwarf pine is a tough customer, growing slowly, but long lived, the oldest known specimen of which dates over 2400 years old.  The tree itself is a slow-growing small shrubby tree with irregular growth habit.   The bark is reddish-grey with scaling and the needles are very stiff.  Best used as a specimen plant, it is very tolerant of poor rocky soils and prefers a slightly dry environment.  Hardy to -30F (-34.4C); height: 20ft.

Slash Pine - Pinus elliotti -  A tall evergreen with dark green 12in. needles in groups of two per fascicle.  Cones are 6-10in. in length and are a dark brown in color.  The tree has a strong central trunk and grows in a conical shape.  Prefers sandy, poorly drained soils.  This species is widely used as timber, pulp and paper and was at one time a primary source of turpentine, thus the name 'slash pine', which came from the cuts slashed into the tree to permit resin collection.  Good landscape tree  Hardy to 10F (-17.7C);  height: 100ft.
