 Virginia Creeper (American Ivy) - Parthenocissus quinquefolia -  Fast growing clinging vine with 5 lobed leaves that turn deep burgundy in the fall.  Produces tiny blue berries loved by birds.  Great for covering walls, fences, or hillsides.  Hardy to -40F  (-40C);  height: 50ft. (vine)

TIP:  RECOGNIZING POISON IVY Rhus radicans aka Toxicodendron radicans or Poison Ivy is a vine that often climbs on the side of trees or other support, but can also be found trailing along the ground or growing like a shrub.  The Trifolate, three leaves per cluster, are green in the spring, turning red in the fall.  The leaves are ovate and often (but not always) have serrated edges. Touching any part of the plant causes a skin reaction in most people and this is true whether leaves are on or off of the vine, whether plant is growing or dormant, and even from dead plant material and the smoke from burning the plant material.  Although there are other trifolate vines with different leaf shapes that do not have the poisonous sap, around here we count the leaves and avoid any vine with three leaves in a cluster. see also: HOW TO GET RID OF POISON IVY ,   POISON IVY SKIN TREATMENT ,   ITCH TREATMENT NEXT TIP
