OATS

   ( Haver, Yulaf, Dousar)  - Annual - Planted for centuries as a staple grain for food and fodder.  The seeds, which appear in summer, can be used to make cereals, sprouts, and flour, and are used in the making of whiskey.  The seeds are sometimes roasted and used as a coffee substitute or ground and made into a poultice to treat dry skin (as the seed is high in oils).  High in antioxidants, it is considered a good food for lowering cholesterol, and has even been used as an antidepressant.  Oats have been used as a food for those recovering from an illness.  Oat straw is used as fibre for making paper.  The seed hulls are used in the making of nylon and celulose pulp.  Oats also make an excellent cover crop or green manure, growing quickly.
