Nandina (Heavenly Bamboo, Japanese Bamboo,Sacred Bamboo) - Nandina domestica - Perennial - This beautiful bamboo-like plant is valued for its gorgeous color-changing foliage and is a favorite in the southern US. The long divided leaves emerge with a red tint and turn purple in the autumn. Flowers, produced in summer, are erect panicles at the tip of the stems. Blooms are white, 1/4 to 1/2 inch in diameter. Nandina is a lovely ornamental or specimen plant and can be grown in either sun or shade. Excellent as a border, a backdrop to other plants or as a potted plant. Unlike true bamboo, it is not invasive. It prefers a fairly moist rich peaty soil in a location sheltered from cold winds. Full sun to full shade; Hardy to -10F (-23.3); plant height: 4-5ft.
