Palo Nuevo (Palo Judio, Sweetwood, Arroyo Sweetwood) - Myrospermum sousanum - This sub-tropical tree is a native of southern Texas and northern Mexico and was scientifically catalogued in 1982, though, of course, locals have known of its existance for centuries. It bears clusters of small white flowers with the scent of cinnamon-vanilla and its branches bear pinnate leaves, resembling a large fern. The wood and seeds of the tree are also scented like the blooms. Easy to grow and develops quickly, blooming in 3-4 years. Not especially particular about soil types and is drought resistant. Does well as a potted plant, but may soon over-run the pot. Full sun; hardy to 10F (-17.7C); plant height: 6-60ft.
