Royal Medlar (Mespilius germanica)  Pretty ornamental shrub or small tree with a dense spreading head of branches and edible fruits.  Related to the hawthorn, the leaves are similar, but larger.  Produces solitary white blooms tinged with a pink flush.  The fruits have a distinctive flavor and, like quince, the fruit should be allowed to ripen fully on the tree before picking.  Interesting and very good.  Hardy to -20F (-28.8C); height: 10ft.
