American Linden  (Basswood) - Tillia americana - Nice tree with an upright growth habit with heart shaped leaves and fragrant yellow flowers in the summer which mature to form blue berries in the fall.   Fall foliage is yellow.  Grows quickly.  Hardy to -40F  (-39.9C);  height: 90ft.

Amur Linden - Tilia amurensis - The Amur Linden is native to Korea,  Manchuria, and Siberia.  The leaves are heart-shaped and the tree produces small panicles of yellow-green blooms in the spring, followed by edible nuts.  Less cold hardy than its European relatives, it is a better linden for warmer climates.  Hardy to -30F (-34.4C);  height: 90ft.

Bigleaf Linden (Large leafed Lime Tree)  Tilia platyphyllos -  Linden trees at one time made up the majority of the forest trees in England.  T. platyphyllos has large heart shaped leaves, which are very dark green above and lighter green underneath.  It casts a very dense shade and has a conical shape.  As all lindens, it produces edible leaves, flowers and nuts.  A good specimen for shade, it is a long lived tree (500 years +).  Prefers cool summers.  Hardy to -40F (-40C);  height: 90ft.

Littleleaf Linden (Lime Tree) Tilia cordata - This is a lovely and long-lived tree, with a pyramidal or conical shape, dense branching, and small heart shaped leaves.  Spring blooms are yellow in color, followed by small nuts, about 1/3 inch in diameter which, when immature, are crushed and used as a chocolate substitute.  Young leaves are eaten as a salad, or on sandwiches, and the blooms are used in herbal teas.  In the spring, the sap is often collected and boiled down to make a syrup, which is used like maple syrup.  Excellent street, forest, or shade tree.  Hardy to -40F (-40C); height: 90ft.

Silver Linden - Tilia tomentosa -  This variety is native to southeastern Europe and has heart shaped leaves that are dark green on the upper side and a light silver grey on the underside.  Presents a shimmering appearance when the wind blows.  The tree produces small panicles pf yellow blooms in the spring, followed by small nuts.  Leaves, flowers and nuts are edible.  Excellent dense shade tree with a conical growth habit.
