Dittany (Chin Ch'Iao Erh Chiao, Gas Plant, Pai Hsien, False Dittany) -
Dictamnus alba - Perennial - Bushy plant bearing spikes of fragrant
white blooms and ovate leaves, which give the entire plant the aroma of
orange peel. The bitter tasting bark has been used for centuries
by the Chinese to treat fevers and infection. It is also used to
treat skin disorders, German measles, arthritic pain and jaundice.
The leaves are used to brew a lemon-scented tea. The plant prefers
a moist well-drained soil, though it is drought tolerant. Makes a pretty
border or accent plant. Hardy to -30F (-34.4C); height: 3ft.
