CROSSANDRA

Topical evergreen plants native to India, Sri Lanka and arts of Africa, members of the Acanthus family, Acanthaceae.  Showy and long lasting funnel shaped blooms of orange or yellow are produced surrounded by deep green oval foliage.  Crossandras make excellent container or accent plants for pools and decks.  They form a shrub 1-3ft tall and spread to 1-3ft wide, but are most often used in cooler climates as potted plants and are kept small or regrown as annuals.

The plants thrive in rich soil and require a minimum temperature of 55F.   Crossandra is easily grown from seed or by taking cuttings in early spring.  Seeds should be sown in a mix of compost or peat and sand and kept at 70-80F until germinating.  Seedlings should be transplanted when they reach 2 inches in height.   Cuttings may be taken from green shoots, inserted in sandy peat and covered with glass or plastic.  Syringe regularly and transplant when roots have formed.  The soil shoul dnot be allowed to dry out completely and plants should be kept in relatively high humidity and bright light.  They prefer full sun, though they will tolerate light shade as well. 

Crossandras are perfect for the butterfly garden with their bright colors and make lovely garden shrubs in warmer climates.
