Parrot's Beak (Glory Pea, Red Kaka Beak, Kow-hai-ngutu-kaka, Lobster Claw, Parrot Bill) - Clianthus puniceus - This trailing shrub from New Zealand has dark green pinnate foliage (similar to a Cypress vine) and masses of 3inch brilliant red flowers in the spring that attached birds, bees, butterflies and hummingbird.  Fast growing, reaching a height of 3 to 12ft. in length.  Best as an outdoor plant in warm, dry climates and as a potted plant in others.  Does well in a wide variety of soils, though a rich soil comprised of loam and peat with sand will yield the largest specimens.  Needs good drainage.  Should be pruned as soon as flowering has completed to discourage leggy growth.  Good variety to espalier.  Usually flowers the second year, though it may do so in its first.  This gorgeous beauty is nearly extinct in the wild and is classed as an endangered species, though it is often seen in cultivation.   Full sun;  plant height: 3-12ft.
