Cinnamonbark Clethra (Sweet Pepperbush, Summersweet) Clethra acuminata -  Large deciduous shrub producing an abundance of  blooms in the summer.  Carried in racemes, they resemble a Lily of the Valley and are very fragrant.  Fall foliage is golden and the bark is cinnamon-red and fragrant.  Growth habit is more upright than C. alnifolia and C. barbinervis.  The plant prefers a location with moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade.  Hardy to -20F (-28.8C); height: 20ft.

clethra alnifolia  Sumersweet (Sweet Pepperbush, Coastal Sweet Pepperbush, White Alder)  Clethra alnifolia - Deciduous shrub bearing racemes of fragrant white blooms in the summer.  The stems can be used to produce a mild soap substitute.  The plants prefer a well-drained sandy loam, but are very tolerant and will grow in most garden soils (they don't like highly alkaline soils, however).  They make lovely border plants and can be sheared into fragrant and attractive hedges.  Hardy to -30F (-34.4C); height: 6ft.

clethra barinervis  Japanese Clethra - Clethra barbinervis - Native Japanese variety with racemes of very fragrant white blooms (4-6 inches long) appearing in summer, followed by small berries.  Leaves are oval in shape and turn a deep bronze or red in autumn.  The bark is reddish-brown in color, fragrant,and peels in strips.  The plant prefers a moist, well-drained soil, slightly acidic. Stems can be pulverized and used to obtain a mild soap.   Makes a nice specimen or accent plant or can be trimmed into a hedge.  Hardy to -30F (-34.4C); height: 6ft.
