Tarahumara chia - Salvia tiliafolia - Annual - Culinary - A traditional food of the Tarahumara and Chumash peoples, it is said to bestow improved endurance upon those who eat it. The seeds are roasted, then crushed and mixed with water to make the gel which contains a concentrated source of energy. The plant is an attractive 4-6ft. shrub which bears spikes of vibrant blue flowers in summer. Full sun; plant height: 4-6ft. 110-120 days.
