CHAMAECYPARIS
(Plant heights are given at maturity)

Chamaecyparis are a group of evergreen trees in the Cupressaceae family, distinguished from true Cypresses (Cupressus) by their flattened branches and their general hardiness.  Native to North America, Japan and Taiwan, they are a good choice for landscaping, but do not do well in areas with heavy smog or air pollution.  The trees are known for their long lives, some living trees have been reported to be over 1700 years old.

The trees thrive in ordinary garden soils, but prefer a moist well drained soil.  Most species also prefer a slightly sheltered location.  The trees may be propagated by means of sowing seed in early spring.  Stored seed should be cold stratified (See Cold Stratification) for 30 days prior to planting for best germination.

The sap has been used medicinally to encourage sweating and as a diuretic
