Astragalus
canadensis - Perennial - Creamy yellow lupine-like
flowers in
midsummer. Dark green leaves. The roots are used as a pain
killer to treat back and chest complaints,
and to treat coughs and colds. The plant is tough,
growing in a
wide
variety of conditions and is a nitrogen fixer. Hardy to

- Perennial - The unripe
seed pods of this plant are edible - raw or cooked - and are considered
quite
tasty. Medicinally, the roots have been used to treat
convulsions
and
wounds and a tea made from the roots is used as a stimulant. The
plant
is a spreading perennial with nitrogen fixing roots and lupine-like
blooms
in yellow tinged in purple. Good plant for erosion control,
for
steep banks or rocky areas. Does not like damp areas and is
difficult

Chinese Milkvetch (Yellow Vetch) Astragalus
membranaceus -
Perennial - Perennial plant prized for its nitrogen fixing
qualities. It prefers a light sandy loam soil in full sun.
Considered by the Chinese as
one of the 50 basic herbs, the root contains antioxidants and is used
to
stimulate the immune system, lower blood pressure and blood
sugar.
It is also said to promote stamina and cold resistance. Current
research
suggests it as an aid to patients receiving chemotherapy. Height:
