Asters are perennial or annual plants producing lolely booms for the
garden. Members of the Daisy family, Compositae, they are native
to many parts of the world.
Perennial asters are prized garden plants blooming from summber to
late fall. They are easily grown from seed or division and thrive
in ordinary garden soil. They may be planted in spring or fall
and should be left undisturbed for 2 or 3 years if large clumps are
desired. To obtain the largest blooms, the plants shoul dbe dug
every year in the fall or spring and spearated . Easch plant
should be set out in a bed or in rows 15 inches apart for a good
display in the fall. Weeds should be controlled to allow the
plants to fully develop. After blooming, the flowers should be
cut off to prevent reseeding of weaker plants.
Annual asters may be easily grown from seed sown the spring and will
bloom all summer long. Seed can be directly sown in to the garden
or sown in pots or trays about 8 weeks before the last killing frost
then the seedlings transplanted to the garden. both methods will
produce quantities of blooms.
