Bearberry - Arcostaphylos uva-ursi  Medium sized evergreen shrub with small white blooms in the spring that develop into pink berries.  The new leaves are made into a tea used to treat bladder and kidney complaints, into a mouthwash, or into a salve used to treat skin problems and are considered highly antibiotic.  The berries are used to make drinks or jellies or eaten raw or dried.  A dye can be obtained from the leaves or berries.  The plant itself is low growing and makes a good ground cover or erosion control.  It prefers a light sandy soil that is well drained and can do very well in poor soils.  It is not particular as to quantity of sunlight and does well in shade, semi-shade or full sun.  Hardy to -30F (-34.4C); height: 3ft.
