Arabis, or Rockcress, is a hardy low growing plant used in rock gardens and wall gardens or as a border plant. Members of the Mustard family (Cruciferae) they are native to parts of Europe and Asia Minor. The plants thrive best in well drained soils and worst in heavy clay.
Propagation is performed by sowing seed, digging and dividing existing plants, or by taking cuttings as soon as the blooms have faded. Seeds should be sown in pots, trays or a bed prepared with a medium of 1 part sphagnum peat to 1 part sand. They should be covered lightly and kept moist, but not soggy at about 70F. When seedlings are about 2 inches in height, they can be transplanted to larger containers or directly to the garden, if the temperatures do not fall below 65F.
The leaves of A. caucasica are eaten as a salad green or a garnish.
