Cistanthe
(Plant heights are given at maturity)

Tender perennial succulent plant with rounded fleshy leaves on tall stems topped by primrose like blooms. They make excellent rock garden or container plants and prefer well drained rocky or sandy soil in a sunny location. The plants are extremely adaptable to a wide variety of soil and watering conditions.

The plants are easily propagation by digging and separating existing plants, taking cuttings or sowing seed. Cuttings can be taken by breaking off the leaves and inserting the base of the leaf into moist sand or a mix of 1 part spahnum peat moss to 1 part sand. Seeds should be sown in pots, trays or a bed prepared with a soiless seed starting medium (1 part sphagnum peat moss to 1 part sand is fine). Sow the seed and cover lightly. Maintain temperature at about 70F and keep the medium moist, but not soggy. When seedlings reach 2 inches in height, transplant to larger containers or, if outdoor temperatures remain above 55F, you may set the transplants in an outdoor prepared area.
